One could argue that the whole purpose of existence is to progress through rational thinking . An individual embraces their true self with the help of the intellect. The Divine has bestowed upon the individual the freedom to disobey, go against, and even retaliate against irrational laws and morals. If one does not utilize the freedom of retaliation, an individual betrays their true nature of the self. In this dignifying act, one could see the validity of truth in the Individual. On the contrary, appeal to majority falsifies the nature of t he Individualism and George, 2 devalues self-reliance. As philosopher Eric Fromm advocates : â€Å"Each person turns into a small-or large-cog in this machine. He lives under the illusion of being an individual-while he has turned into a thing. As a result, we observe an increasing lack of adventurousness, individualism,willingness to make decisions and take risks.†(Fromm,331) An Individual is stripped of his human value when one blindly falls in the trap of archaic irrationality. Archaic irrationality can be seen in the book Mans Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl. The book depicts the historical tragedy Hitler elicited on the Jews. The author, being a Jew, was put to work in the concentration camps. His job was to monitor his fellow men get derailed and tortured.(Frankl) One can argue that a true individual would have stepped out of the archaic irrationality and rebelled against the large machine, which in this case, was the government. This is not going to end well This specific episode aired on CBS May 24, 2010. This type of family includes two brothers who are living together in a beach house, and they have a very loud house maid who seems to get into everyones business and almost sometimes does whatever she wants to. One of the men Alan Harper has a young son named Jake, who goes back and forth between his father and mothers house. When he is with his mother he has strict rules and a structure setting. When he is living with his father and uncle, Charlie Harper, and maid, his life is complete and udder chaos. Jake does not have a normal life, and is introduced to many inappropriate things that a young child like him should not be seeing at his age. For example, in this particular episode, Charlie gets his license suspended, and young Jake ends up having to be his driver. Jake is introduced to many things like women, drugs, and alcohol, and sometimes gets into some pretty bad trouble. I think that this child is definitely growing up in a messed up situation and may even end up having more problems when he gets older. The role models that Jake has to look up to in this sit-com show would be his normal mother who sets rules and guidelines for him. But then, he also has his father, Alan, who is a lot of the time influenced by his brother, Charlie, into doing a lot of bad things. This is not good for Jake, because then he sees his father being pressured, and his father gives in, and so then Jake could look at it as its ok to do it since his father did. His uncle, Charlie, is not a good role model at all, not even a little. Jake should not even be left with his uncle, because his uncle is living life easy everyday and has women around all the time. He is drinking a lot of the time, and is lazy and kind of a lacker. He does not show Jake how to act like a mature, responsible adult at all. They are a family though, because they do support one another, and yes, Uncle Charlie is there for Jake if he has a problem or needs help. They are all there for one another and give each other support and advice if it is needed. They are what I would consider a dysfunctional family, but they are a family. Later on in some other episodes, his mother ends up remarrying, and he then has a mother, father example in his life, about how a family is supposed to be. So far in most of the episodes, Jake seems to have more common sense then his Uncle Charlie, and helps to sometimes keep him out of trouble. I think that Jake will grow up pretty much normal, for the fact that he understands that his Uncle Charlie is a bit on the crazy side. Most of the time Charlie likes to keep the things he does away from Jake, but since life happens, Jake sees some of the things he does. When Jake goes back and forth between his mother and fathers house, the relationship between his biological parents are not very friendly. He seems them fighting and having a big disagreement, and this is not healthy for him to see. This could cause Jake in the long run to have relationship problems when he is old enough to have a girlfriend. He does see that his step-father and mother live happily together and this may be able to push the bad stuff from his mind and he may be able to understand that a husband and wife are to be sacred. He does have to live with his biological mother and father being separated, but in the television show it does not show that he has really been affected by living with his parents in separate households. The only thing that is a problem, is that the communication between his parents is not the greatest and so how they raise him is different. He gets away with some things at his father’s house that he would never get away with at his mothers. I think that this type of family is not very good for a child to grow up in. 7th Heaven â€Å"Small Miracles† This episode aired on April 8, 2007. In this episode it seemed that small little things, could change a big decision and it was a sign as to what was meant to be. Eric learned that by performing his job he also learned some things from someone older and wiser. He learned to forgive and let go. This was the most interesting part for me. The blackbirds lead him to the answer. I like this episode because as always it was a learning experience in that you can be old and still be able to help someone with a problem as in Erics neighbor and church member helping him with his outlook on life and how to fight even if he thinks there is no hope. Eric was worried about dying and his friend helped him to see it was worth listening to others to learn answers. Ruthies problems stem from her always doing before thinking and wanting Mom and Dad to take care of it but now Mom and Dad arent having any of it and she has to do it on her own without T-Bones help too. They all learned that life is precious. This family was definitely something special, and it showed what a family was supposed to be like, the good and the bad. I used to watch this show all the time when I was younger, and loved it because I wish in some ways my family was like theirs. They are a close-nit and strong family, and they communicate very well with one another. The characters in this television show were, Reverend Eric Camden, his wife Annie Camden, and they had 7 kids. Matt, which was the oldest child used to be a bad kid with bad grades. He eventually cleaned his act up and graduated at the top of his class. He was the biggest role model for the younger kids, and it was a good thing that he turned his life around for the better. Mary Camden was the next oldest and was a huge athlete fanatic. She played on the high school basketball team. She dated around until she met a boy named Wilson, who had a child, and she was in love with him. She eventually like other teens let her grades slip, and the team followed, and there for got locked out of the basketball courts. Mary did not want to go to college after high school, but instead go out into the work field. She could not even hold down a job and kept getting fired. Mary was not on the right path and was getting in trouble with drinking and cops, and was becoming rebellious so she left her family. She eventually calmed down and got a clean head on her shoulders and returned home. She was the biggest role model for her younger sister Lucy. Lucy Camden was seen in many episodes with many different boyfriends, and her character was portrayed as being overly dramatic and spoiled. She seemed to whine a lot to get her way, because she was the middle child. Lucy was very popular in high school, because she was so pretty and always pretty self conscious about the way she dressed. Lucy eventually followed in her father’s footsteps and became a minister just like him. She ended up finding an amazing guy named Kevin and was having kids. Another middle child was Simon Camden, who was the one who was always working and having money. Simon was in high school and ended up accidentally killing his friend Paul in a car accident. He ended up graduating early so that he did not have to deal with the stress of being bullied at school. The youngest sister was Ruthie Camden was very smart and could get others to do what she liked. She had a very good relationship with her brother Simon and they would always hang out and get into trouble. The two youngest siblings are Sam and David Camden which are twins, and they are only young babies. This family is so great with one another, and really shows all walks of life and how different people are. This family works well with one another because they are all supportive if something happens or if one of them does something wrong. This is a great example of what a family is like, because they all have their ups and downs. My family is like theirs, but my family consists of only my parents, me and my brother, but we are all still there for one another even if one of us gets into trouble. If the only thing we knew about family was what we knew from what we saw on TV, I don’t think anyone would know what family was. There are so many different types of families on TV, and a lot of them are really screwed up, like the Simpsons, or Family Guy. Those are not families, because they are so screwed up and the kids do ridiculous things. I would not base my understanding of family off television shows like this, but rather off shows like 7th Heaven, Full House or Everybody Loves Raymond. These families are all supportive of one another and there for anyone who needs advice or help. In Family Guy there’s a talking baby who wants to take over the world, or daughter whose sleeps around, and a fat older child who is just plain stupid. This is not a family, but rather just a funny TV show. Yes, I’m sure there might be families this weird, but they usually have a harder time with life, and don’t really understand the meaning of family. My family like I said earlier is like 7Th Heaven, in that we all have different likes and dislikes, but we are all still there for one another. I appreciate my family, and what they mean to me. One day, I hope to raise my family like a mine was, because I want my children to understand that they can come to me for anything, and that they should be able to count on their brothers and sisters for anything as well. A family is there for one another no matter what, even if they’re in jail, or dying, they will be there to hold your hand to the last second. A family is supportive, understanding, caring, and loving. If the television shows were the only thing we could rely on for a definition of family, some people would definitely get the wrong impression. Anne Bradstreet The Puritan Poet English Literature Essay Anne Bradstreet was a puritan poet in the 17th century. She experienced hardships throughout her life, but she did the best she could to live by God. She often expressed her thoughts and emotions throughout her poetry. In terms of puritan ideals Bradstreets poetry closely reflected her personal faith in God and the kingdom. Anne Bradstreet was born in Northampton, England in 1612. Her father, Thomas Dudley, was a puritan, but Bradstreet loved to read and seemed to be drawn to the puritan world herself. At the age of 16 she married Simon Bradstreet who was also a puritan. As a child she found much comfort in reading the scriptures. However, during her childhood Bradstreet experienced many moments of ill health. And as an adult, she gave birth to eight children, but only one survived. In spite of her hardships Bradstreet continued on her journey to authorship. Puritanism back then was considered to be a way of life. Its ideal may be best expressed as living in the world without actually being a part of it. A puritan remained strict with morals, and their religion. Puritans believed it was necessary to to live on the earth, and abide by the laws given, but kept in mind that eventually this world would pass. So, that meant the puritans tried to contain a balance between this world and the next. There was no way to safely turn their back on the world since God had created it, and found it to be good. But they could not rely on the security of an earthly world either. However, just as any imperfect human being would, Bradstreet struggled to maintain her faith at times by rebelling and submitting. But just because she may have had doubts did not make her any less of a puritan. She expressed these feelings in poetry as well discussing struggles between her love for this world, and reliance on the next. This was not an attempt for rebelliousness but her attempt of achieving the puritan way of life. Bradstreet not only wrote about events that occurred in her life, but she wrote about the people in it. For example, the poems about her husband whom she loved very much. In To My Dear and Loving Husband, Bradstreet wrote about the love for her husband but created it to be in harmony with the love for God. Puritans were taught that if a husband and wife did not express love towards each other than they disobeyed God. In the last 2 lines The heavens reward thee manifold I pray. Then while we live, in love lets so persevere. That when we live no more, we may live ever (105 Daly). In these lines she expresses her obedience to God, and how she looks to him. She is determined to maintain love in her marriage until the day they die no matter what they may face. Therefore, when they do pass, they will meet in heaven and be together forever. In A Letter to Her Husband, Absent Upon Public Employment Bradstreet wrote about what her husbands love meant to her. Not only does she use symbolism, but she uses a metaphysical approach. In this poem her husband is absent, and she misses him dearly. She goes on to describe how lonely she feels without him, and compares herself to being like the earth without a sun. For her, he is like the sun providing warmth, so without him she is cold and numb. In Upon the Burning of our House Bradstreet shows a brief attachment to materialism, and realizes if it was meant to be then so be it. In this poem her house has burnt down, and she is feeling down. In the beginning she is observing everything that will no longer be used. But she does not lose faith, and keeps in mind that God has the power to give and take as he pleases. Therefore, she puts all her trust in God that he can and will provide for her. In The Author to Her Book Bradstreet wrote of her own faults. She is honest of pointing out her own flaws. I believe the poem is about her work being ready to be published, and seen by others, but she is not ready. She is supposed to have the pure image of a puritan, but she may have fallen short in some areas. Bradstreet feels like she is going to be judged by all, and it is not going to be positive feedback. The tone of the poem is frustration and worry. I cast thee by as one unfit for lightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Thy blemishes amend, if so I co uld: I washed thy face, but more defects I saw, and rubbing of a spot, still made a flaw. However, in the Prologue, Bradstreet wrote about herself and her limitations as a woman. Bradstreet is proud of who she is, and what she has become. Why cant they be looked upon as equals? Bradstreet just expressed herself more bluntly than most. A sense of pride and belief in herself was required if she wanted to become known as a poet in the 17th century. In Bradstreets works she displays a sense of spirituality, but in others she seems to be her own judge. She realizes herself, her flaws and where she falls short. He and one of Bianca's suitors, Luciento had a conversation. As a joke, Luciento mentioned to Petruchio marry Katherine. Petruchio though of the profit and thought it could be great. Petruchio and Katherine's father meet and decide that Petruchio will get twenty-thousand crowns if he weds Katherine. Petruchio and Katherine meet and they do not start off on the best of terms. But Petruchio decides they should get married anyway and he sets a date. Petruchio then leaves to get ready for the wedding . The wedding day arrives and Petruchio arrives at the wedding in ridiculous clothing and drunk. During the ceremony he hits the priest. During their own reception Petruchio demands that they shall leave, now the taming begins. Now the taming begins. Once they leave the wedding and are en route to Petruchio's home in Verona, Kate has to ride a burrow through the rain while Petruchio rides a horse. During their trip back many bad things happen to Kate. When they arrive at Petruchio's home Katherine could not fufill her needs of sleep and food with Petruchio's excuses of the food not being good enough and the bed not being good enough for her.
